I have a black thumb. I know lots of people probably think that’s an excuse or a lack of effort but for me it’s a true affliction. An individual with a black thumb struggles to grow plant life of any kind. This is true for me, but beyond that, plant life struggles to thrive even if I’m merely present. It’s emotionally taxing to watch vegetation wilt when you walk in the room. I can feel their distrust. It’s the same feeling I have when watch a movie I know will emotionally devastate me. It’s been a challenging year for our farmers market. With the cold spring, followed immediately by the wet and hot summer, produce is behind schedule. Many farmers have replanted 2-3 times due to flooding, and the hot temperatures hurt those who had high tunnels, leaving little in the way of lettuce, radishes, beets, spinach and Asian vegetables at the market.…

The Clear Lake Farmers Market has partnered with Healthy Harvest of North Iowa to bring cooking demos and tasting events to you each month. This month we will be sampling Gazpacho – a delightful, cold soup made with fresh raw vegetables.

I’m sure the first thing you think of when you think of a farmers market is the bounty of brightly colored fruits and vegetables available, but did you know that you can find some delicious, homemade breads and other baked goods as well. The Clear Lake Farmers Market offers several vendors that showcase a variety of their ‘made with love’, delectable treats. We have everything from sweet and savory breads, to pies, cookies, cupcakes, bars and more. And of course, you can’t forget the oooey, gooey cinnamon and caramel rolls that are just begging to be served with a great cup of coffee.
